about

Keep on the Sunny Side

Early in Ada Blenkhorn's life, she was given the task of caring for an invalid nephew who always wanted his wheel chair to be pushed 'down the sunny side of the street.' His constant repetition of this phrase inspired her to write the gospel Keep On The Sunny Side Of Life. (Phil Kerr - Music in Evangelism, 1944)

Wildwood Flower

A song best known through performances and recordings by the Carter Family. However, the song predates them. The original title was "I'll Twine 'Mid the Ringlets", by J.P. Webster and Maud Irving, composed in 1860. There is even rumors about Webster and Irving not being the original authors, and that the song is based on "The Pale Amaranthus", a parlour song from around 1800, depicting a maiden's complaint against her faithless lover, whom she vows to forget.

John Hardy

Wheeling Daily Register
October 13, 1893

WELCH, W. VA., October 12. - At 8 o'clock this morning the jury in the case of the State against John Hardy, colored, for the murder of Thomas Drews, colored, at Eckman, this county, in January last, brought in a verdict of guilty of murder in the first degree. The trouble arose over a game of craps and was a cold blooded crime. Motion has been made for a new trial with but small hopes of success on account of the Criminal Court Judge's indisposition. A recess has been taken until Monday morning.

Georgie Buck

A prime example of what Cece Conway called in American Banjo Echoes in Appalachia (1995) the ‘banjo song genre', with its rhythmic and syncopated playing, elaborated musical interludes, compressed vocal lines of two or more syllables per beat, occasional but irregular interruptions by instrumental interludes within the stanza and varied repetition of instrumental elements.
